Gaza Civil Defense warns storm threatens displaced families in tents
Agency urges precautions as heavy rain, strong winds and cold temperatures expected to hit the strip on Friday.

Gaza’s Civil Defense Directorate issued a warning on Thursday regarding an approaching storm system. The agency stated that heavy rainfall and strong winds expected on Friday could endanger thousands of displaced Palestinian families. These families currently live in fragile tents or buildings damaged by previous attacks.
The weather system is projected to bring potentially dangerous conditions to the enclave. Civil Defense officials highlighted that displaced Palestinians in makeshift tents face serious risks from the elements. Heavy rain and powerful winds could tear apart shelters and flood living spaces. Essential belongings may also be damaged or destroyed by the incoming storm.
Families staying in residential buildings weakened by bombardment are also at risk. The agency warned that severe weather could cause cracked walls to fail. Unstable sections of these structures might collapse under the pressure of wind and rain. Residents were strongly advised against remaining inside such structurally compromised buildings for their safety.
Civil Defense urged residents to take immediate precautions before the storm arrives. Families were called upon to reinforce tent stakes and secure plastic sheeting. Building earth barriers around shelters was recommended to reduce the risk of flooding. Digging drainage channels to divert rainwater away from tents was also suggested as a protective measure.
The directive included advice to secure metal roofing materials against strong gusts. Keeping bedding, clothing and other belongings elevated above ground level was emphasized. This step aims to prevent water damage to essential items during potential flooding. The agency stressed that following these warnings could help prevent injuries and loss of life.
Humanitarian organizations were appealed to for urgent assistance in providing safer accommodation. The Civil Defense Directorate asked community groups to strengthen protection measures for vulnerable families. The Jerusalem Weather Center confirmed that a rainy system would affect Palestine starting Friday. A noticeable drop in temperatures accompanied by strong winds is also anticipated.
Coastal areas, particularly the Gaza Strip, are expected to be among the hardest hit. Large numbers of Palestinians remain displaced across the region due to ongoing conflict. Many live in worn-out tents or overcrowded shelters with inadequate protection. The approaching winter weather presents another significant threat to their already difficult living conditions.
